Houses in astrology: where your energy actually shows up

Houses are the part of astrology that turns symbolism into daily life. A planet in a sign describes a quality; the house tells you which room of your life that quality tends to walk into.
The twelve houses at a glance
- 1st — self, appearance, approach.
- 2nd — resources, values, self-worth.
- 3rd — communication, learning, siblings.
- 4th — home, roots, family.
- 5th — creativity, play, romance.
- 6th — routine, work, health.
- 7th — partnership and one-to-one relationships.
- 8th — intimacy, shared resources, transformation.
- 9th — belief, travel, higher study.
- 10th — career, reputation, direction.
- 11th — community, friendship, hopes.
- 12th — solitude, the unconscious, rest.
Empty houses are not empty lives
Most charts have more houses than planets. An empty house simply means that area is described by its ruling planet elsewhere in the chart, rather than being a headline theme.
Reading houses for career and purpose
For questions about direction, look at the tenth house and its ruler, then at the sixth house for how you like to work day to day. Together they usually describe a more realistic picture than a single sun-sign career list.
